In the excitement of starting your new online business there are many things to consider. Amid the multitude of tasks, one very important decision is choosing your domain name for your new website. This is most people's first introduction to your business and so it needs to be given plenty of thought.
So what important things do you need to pay attention to when choosing your domain name for your online business? Well, it's best if your site name is easy to remember and tells people what your site is about. It can be good fun choosing a name, brainstorming and listing all the names you would like and that you think would be appropriate for your site.
The frustrating bit can be when you are excitedly thinking that you have found the perfect name to your website, only to discover when you check it out, that the domain name you decided was perfect for you is already taken. However, with a little time and patience, you will come up with a domain name that you think fits for you and your website. The next step is to run it past the few friends or colleagues to get their feedback. There may be implications to your name choice which you hadn't noticed. If you don't check with other people, then at least sit with it for a few days, while you see how well this name would really work for you.
It's also a good idea to check out any sites with similar names. There could possibly be some advantage to your site for it to have a name similar to a well-known site. You might get some traffic from people who haven't quite remembered the name accurately and have inadvertently landed on your site instead of the one they thought they wanted.
However, you would not want to be associated with any sites of a dubious nature, which have a similar name to your site. A friend of mine, when setting up a website about angels, the fluffy beings of love and light who she believes assist us, was horrified to find that sites with similar names to the one she had chosen were what are politely termed 'adult sites'. Not what she would want to be confused with.
When choosing a domain name, it's very helpful if you can focus on what your online business is about and come up with a domain name which incorporates your major keywords. It's not always possible, especially if you're in a busy market, where most of the obvious ones have been taken, but with a bit of flexible thinking, you can come up with a winner for yourself.
One point to bear in mind is that search engines such as Google currently favour a website whose name includes the site's keywords. Your search engine rankings could be improved if you can do the same. A defining question to ask yourself when choosing your domain name, is 'Does this name tell people what my online business is about?' if so, you're on the right lines.
Your first goal is to get visitors to your site and, once they are regulars, you want them to be able to remember your domain name and to type it into their browser easily. Consequently, choosing a domain name that is simple and easy to remember will be beneficial to your business, assisting you in building your brand.
Time spent considering this and choosing your domain name with care is time well spent for your online marketing business. Have fun with the process.
